Trip to Zakynthos

The story of the Zakynthos’ Shipwreck beach in Greece

Posted on 04/22/2020

It's an astonishing beach, with an amazing story.

The famous "Shipwreck beach", known in Greek as “Navagio”, is located in the island of Zakynthos.

The beach became notorious after a naval accident during which the shipwreck of the merchant ship named “Panagiotis” was chased by the Greek authorities. It had been suspected of smuggling alcohol and cigarettes into Zakynthos. The ship itself after crashing formed the beach and made the sand built up around it, creating that way this unreal blue shade of water.

Today, the beach remains spectacular and is best viewed from above. It is suggested to head to the monastery of Saint George to gain the best view of the iconic shipwreck. The beach itself is only accessible by boat, which you can actually take from the island's capital, Zakynothos. There are organized trips leaving from Zakynthos every day.
